In addition, Riker and Picard ultimately steal a shuttle from the Titan, with an air of mischievous glee that closely matches the original crew's theft of the Enterprise in Star Trek III. Both Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock present similar outsider captains who make things difficult for the heroes.
That includes the Titan's current captain, Shaw, presented in "The Next Generation" as a stickler for protocol standing in the protagonists' way. The episode deliberately echoes tropes from other Original Series films, too. The episode reveals Beverly Crusher's previously unseen son as a cliffhanger, and while the father has yet to be determined as of this writing, Picard is at the top of the list of suspects. Beverly, similarly, hasn't spoken to either Picard or any other member of the Enterprise-D crew for 20 years. Carol Marcus is an old flame of Kirk's in The Wrath of Khan - the woman he perhaps should have been with - who mothered his son David and then cut him out of her life for decades. Beverly's appearance, too, carries key points over from a similar subplot in the earlier Star Trek movie.
